I tried not to think too much about this list before writing it. I wanted to list the top five things that bring me joy right off the top of my head. While there are many things, big and small that make me happy, I decided to go with the ones that really stood out, that when I thought about them, I knew I couldn’t leave them off of the list.
My children. Let’s just start with the obvious shall we. Let’s also state that sometimes my children are truly joy ruiners, you know, with the whining and crying and fighting and being ungrateful. However, all of that pales in comparison to the things they do to make my heart skip a beat. From the moment they were laid on my chest(seriously, the best three days of my entire life) to the first steps they took, to watching them accomplish so many of their goals. Night time snuggles and the sound of their laughter during tickle fights. Also, for reminding me of the joy in the little things that I often overlook. Like how exciting it can be to discover something as simple as a rock or a leaf or to play in the rain and catch snowflakes on your tongue. My life was good before I had children but I could never go back. To me, my kids are joy.
Giving. Have you ever tried really hard to find that perfect gift for someone and when you watch them open it you can tell immediately that it was indeed, the gift? Have you ever handed a homeless person a hot meal or some money to get them onto their next stop and seen the look of relief and gratitude on their face? That is joy. Have you ever made someones days by “paying it forward” in the checkout line or the drive thru? That is joy. While receiving gifts will always be fun, there is no better feeling than the gift of giving them.
Vacation, specifically, the beach! There is just something so soothing about the sound of the ocean and the smell of the salty air. Maybe it stems from my childhood when I would go to visit my grandma in Houston and we would spend time in Galveston splashing in the water, hunting for crabs and collecting sea shells. While there are many places I would like to travel to someday, I will never, ever be disappointed if I am at the beach.
Reading a good book. I clearly remember my obsession with books starting in the first grade. There was a challenge to see who could read the most books and I hands down beat everyone in the class. Not so much because I wanted to win a contest(well, maybe a little) but just because I loved reading that much. There is something so magical about being able to escape reality for a short time in between the pages of a book. You can fall in love numerous times, travel to places near and far without spending a penny and make the best of friends. While I am not able to read nearly as much as I used to, when I do read a book, I practically devour it like a warm, chocolate chip cookie.
The perfect day. Not so much the perfect day as in everything goes right and life happens exactly as its supposed to. No, I’m speaking more to the perfect weather day. When you look up at the sky and see a blanket of blue that goes on forever and ever. When the temperature is so perfect that you want to lay on a bed of grass and soak it in. The day when you know Fall or Spring has arrived. You know because there is a special smell in the air. I’ve never been able to quite describe that scent(although Bath and Body works does a darn good job with their Autumn candles) but you just know when it has arrived.
Time to share. Comment with at least two things that bring you joy in life.
