When I first saw this particular blog prompt for “blog-tember” my first inclination was to skip it. It’s been over five months since we moved into our new house and it is far from being completely decorated. I keep telling myself that it takes time(and it does) but the fact that I am no Martha Stewart doesn’t help either. While I love pinning all kinds of cute decor ideas on Pinterest, it’s likely that 99% of it will never make it’s way into my home. I truly have zero natural talent for putting it all together and really, it ends up stressing me out. Therefore, I like to go with simple. Or minimalistic. Or lack of being decorated. Call it what you will!
It may not be a Pinterest worthy house but it is MY house and I am excited to share it with you! If you are like me(a little bit nosey), you’ll find it fun to take a peek at other people’s spaces.

Just as soon as the temperature cools down a bit, I plan on buying some big colorful mums to add to our large flower pots on the front porch. It may not feel like Fall but I’m sure ready for it to look like it is!
We have a really nice sized entry which is a good and a bad thing. I love that the house feels open from the moment you walk in but as I stated before, I’m still trying to figure out how to decorate it. Across from this console table is a large blank wall that needs something on it. I’m thinking I’ll probably go with some large family pictures, either in matted frames or on canvas. I also want to add some sort of twigs or flowers to the large vase on the table.
Further down the entryway, right before you get into the living area is this chalkboard and hook piece. I recently purchased it at Target on Clearance(woot, woot) after loving the way that it looked in my best friends house. The pop of color adds a nice touch and my kids love when I add a motivational quote or fun saying on the chalkboard. Best of all, it’s very practical and allows us to have a spot close to the garage and front door to hang our coats, purse and backpacks.
This mirror is probably one of my favorite pieces in our home. I love a good statement piece and to me, that’s what this is. It takes up a good amount of space while still keeping that clean look that I enjoy! Plus, it’s perfect for checking to see if you look presentable before dashing out of the door!
Our home is very much open concept and I feel like the living room/kitchen/dining area is actually just one big room. While I liked it when we were looking at floor plans, I’m still unsure how I feel about living in it. I love that we have tons of awesome natural light but with three kids, sometimes I feel like it would have been nice to have spaces that were slightly more separate.
I loved my bright pillows when we moved in this past Spring but now that Fall is fast approaching I am ready to warm it up a bit. It looks like it’s time to hit up Home Goods!
The giant television is courtesy of my husband. When he brought it home, I seriously threw a huge fit because I thought it was SO ugly! Now that it’s been around a while, it’s grown on me and a smaller television seems like it would look odd on that huge wall.
The room with the French doors is our second living area/bonus room. It currently holds a hodge-podge of things like my treadmill, toys, a big red couch and a second television set along with video games and all of that fun stuff. It’s definitely not “show ready” but hopefully I’ll be able to share pictures of it one day soon.
The throw pillows there on my fireplace? Yeah, I moved them from my loveseat to help “style” this photo a bit. I actually like the way it looks and think I will purchase a couple of new pillows just for this space. What do you think?
I just love this new canvas that I recently purchased from Bed, Bath & Beyond. When we moved, I told myself that I wasn’t going to rush to buy things just to fill a wall and I’m glad I waited for this piece. I think it fits into the space nicely and it most importantly, it makes me happy when I look at it.
Unfortunately, when we were building our house, white cabinets weren’t an option(what the heck?) so we went in a completely opposite direction with an espresso color. While I think they are fine, I’m also getting the itch to have them redone in white, while keeping the island dark. I just think it would change-up the look of the house in such a nice way. We also plan on upgrading the back splash somewhat soon and I am thinking subway tile is the way to go.
Beside the refrigerator is a little nook that I use to hold my mixer and coffee maker. I keep seeing a trend of cute little coffee bars in areas like this so I may have to incorporate that in soon.
Finally, we have the dining room! If it didn’t jump out at you, YES, we need a new chandelier that fits this space. Again, I’m not sure what the builder was thinking installing it but it’s what they left us with. Cringe. We purchased our dining set at World Market a couple of years ago and I am still so happy with it. Maybe one day, when my kids aren’t super messy, I’ll add in some upholstered chairs and a pretty rug but for now, I’ll stick with easy to clean!
The curtains are also a fairly new purchase and I found them for a steal at Tuesday Morning. I’m unsure if they flow with the rest of my house but I like them so I guess in the end, that’s all that really matters! Oh, and that framed picture in the background, one of the very few DIY’s I have ever done! I purchased a simple black wooden frame and cloth napkin from World Market to make my own art! Now, it wasn’t my idea but it was a good one so I ran with it!
So there you have it, a quick look into the main living areas of our home.
And now, I’m kind of in the mood to tackle this big box of family photos that need to find a home on the walls. Maybe.
Do you enjoy decorating your home or would you rather pay someone else to do it?
What is your favorite way to make a house feel like a home? For me, I like nice sheets and pillows, candles and lots of cozy throw blankets!
